Shelia Guenin

Vice Pres. of LTC, Health & Hospital Corp

Shelia Guenin is the Vice President of Long Term Care for Health & Hospital Corporation. She has over 35 years’ experience in long term care having served the profession as an administrator, facility owner, and management consultant. She is the former President of Herrin Associates Co. Inc. a management consulting firm where she served nursing home and assisted living providers in the Midwest for over twenty five years. She attended IUPUI, Indianapolis. Shelia was appointed by the Indiana Health Facilities Council as a State Monitor and CMP Consultant and has served the long term care providers, residents, and regulatory agencies in this unique role. Her skills in management consultation and regulatory compliance have frequently been requested by nursing home and assisted living providers. Her educational contributions to long term care include participation as a guest speaker at various professional association conferences and as an instructor for the IHCA Administrator’s Training Course and the Preceptor Certification Program. She has served as Preceptor for several administrators-in-training. Shelia has been an active member of various long term care associations including the Indiana Health Care Association, the Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the American Medical Director’s Association, and Executive Women in Healthcare.

Rob Brandt

Rob Brandt represents long term care facilities, hospitals, physicians and other health care providers in the defense of medical malpractice actions before medical review panels and courts throughout the state of Indiana. 80% of practice is focused on the defense of hospitals and long term care facilities in both medical malpractice and general liability matters. Additional areas of practice include general business litigation and the representation of insurance companies and other businesses in administrative and regulatory matters before the Indiana Department of Insurance, the Indiana State Department of Health and other state agencies.

Laurie E. Martin

Laurie E. Martin is a partner with Hoover Hull Turner LLP. She practices in the areas of business litigation, employment litigation and consulting, and ERISA litigation. Laurie is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in Indiana, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Laurie has achieved the highest peer review rating (AV Preeminent®*) provided by Martindale-Hubbell, and was selected for inclusion in the listing of Indiana Rising Stars®** (2010, 2014, 2015).

Chris Murray

President, Caitlin-Morgan 

Chris Murray has been President of Caitlin Morgan Insurance Services since 2006. He is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the company by working with management and vendor partners to establish long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies.
 
Chris has more than 22 years of experience in the Alternative Risk Financing industry. He has managed various alternative risk insurance programs from Self-Insurance to Captive Programs.
Chris serves as President and Chairman of the Board for Midwest Insurance Group, Inc, a Risk Retention Group domiciled in Vermont. He also serves as Vice President with M.R. Mead and Company, a well-respected captive management company. In addition, Chris serves as Vice Present of Constitution Insurance Company, LLC, a segregated cell captive domiciled in Tennessee.
 
Chris works closely with the Indiana Nursing Home Associations and serves as a board member of the Indiana Healthcare Foundation, a non-profit charity offering scholarships to those in the healthcare industry. He served on the board of directors of the Arizona Captive Insurance Association and later served as President of the association.
 
Chris obtained his undergraduate degree from Butler University where he majored in accounting and later obtained his CPA designation in 1995.

Aaron Grindstaff

Regional Director of Operations,
TLC Management

Aaron Grindstaff, HFA, LPN  currently serves as a Regional Director of Operations for TLC Management in Marion, Indiana.  Aaron is a Licensed Practical Nurse and is licensed as an Indiana Health Facility Administrator.  Aaron began his medical career in the United States Army.  After his training in the military he achieved his LPN license after attending Ivy Tech, Indianapolis.  He later went on to pursue his Bachelors in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University and became licensed in Indiana as a Health Facility Administrator.  Aaron has spent the past 12 years working in long term care for TLC Management. Since joining TLC  he has served as Assistant Director of Nursing, Director of Admissions & Marketing, Regional Director of Business Development, Health Facility Administrator, Senior Administrator, and currently as the Northern Indiana Regional Director of Operations over 8 TLC facilities.  Aaron resides in Garrett, Indiana with his wife Crystal and their 4 daughters.

Kathleen Unroe, MD, MHA

Assistant Professor of Medicine, Indiana University

Kathleen Unroe, MD, MHA, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Indiana University in Indianapolis. She is a nursing home physician – her research, clinical and policy interests are focused on improving quality of care, particularly access to palliative and end-of-life care, for long stay nursing home residents.  Dr. Unroe was awarded a 2014 Paul B. Beeson K23 Career Development Award to examine hospice use in nursing homes.  She is the co-project director of OPTIMISTIC, a 4 year $13.4 million CMS funded demonstration project aimed at improving quality of care and reducing avoidable hospitalizations in 19 Indiana nursing homes and is the Principal Investigator of a Hartford Foundation planning grant focused on OPTIMISTIC dissemination.  She has also been funded by the National Palliative Care Research Center and was the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine 2014 Junior Investigator of the Year.  She is Vice-Chair of the American Geriatrics Society Public Policy Committee.  She was a 2009-2010 Health and Aging Policy Fellow and had a placement in Health and Human Services, ASPE Office of Disability, Aging, and Long Term Care Policy.  

Calvin Thomas IV

Vice President of the Health Division and School of Social Services, Ivy Tech

Calvin Thomas IV is the current Vice President of the Health Division and School of Public & Social Services at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

Prior to his position in education, Calvin was a healthcare executive.  A native of St. Louis, Missouri, he has been a successful senior executive at hospitals in 4 states (California, Florida, Georgia & Missouri).  In his various roles as a hospital executive, he has been responsible for the development of a $22 million Orthopedic & Spine Institute, a full-service Hospitalist program, the onboarding of an electronic health record system (EPIC) from a paper process and in one healthcare system, has grown shrinking revenue to as much as $500 million dollars annually. He has been an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives since 2000.  In 2003, Calvin joined the National Association of Health Services Executives where he has been a member and a past Southern California Chapter President.

His past leadership experience has been in for-profit hospitals and academic medical center settings.  His commitment to operational efficiencies with excellence is evident in past accomplishments and responsibilities.  Calvin has been hired into roles to grow existing service lines, successfully attain and retain accreditation, drive critical departments through the turnaround process all while enhancing the patient experience and increasing employee engagement.  Some his past departmental responsibilities include the Emergency Department, Trauma, Surgical Services, Anesthesia, Radiology, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Services, Environmental Services, Radiation Oncology, a Pain Clinic, and Laboratory Services as well as many others. 

Calvin Thomas IV received his Bachelor of Science degree from Harris-Stowe State University in Health Care Management and went on to graduate school at Dartmouth College to obtain his Master’s degree in Health Care Leadership.  He is also member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and founding member of the collegiate chapter of 100 Black Men at Harris-Stowe State University.  Currently in Indianapolis, his civic contributions include serving on two task forces of the Indiana Governor’s Health Workforce Council, being a board member of the Indiana Health Industry Forum and an executive board member of Crossroads of America Council (Boy Scouts of America). 

Jennifer Gappa, RN

Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Miller's Health Systems

Jennifer Gappa, RN is a certified HR Professional-PHR and S-CP and licensed as a Health Facilities Administrator. She earned her RN from Purdue and BA from St. Francis College and holds an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. She has extensive long term care experience as an Administrator, Director of Nursing, Nurse Consultant and Medicare Nurse Specialist. Since joining the staff of Miller’s 16 years ago, she has served as the Administrator of Miller’s facilities in New Carlisle and Logansport before assuming the position of VP of Human Resources in 2010. In addition to the established duties of the HR Department, Boyle cites Gappa’s wide-ranging clinical management experience and her advanced education as key to her role of promoting the company’s emphasis on skill training, policy development, and leadership enrichment.
 
Gappa is a board member for Michiana SHRM, and an active member of the Indiana Health Care Association, serving as a past board member and as a current member of the Education and Regulatory Committees. She is a Senior Examiner and Future Leader for the American Health Care Association, as well as a past member of the Ethics Advisory Board. She currently serves on the Indiana State Board of Health Facility Administrators. Gappa and husband, AJ, have 3 grown children and reside at Bass Lake.

Dick Hamman

 

Dick Hamman is a graduate of Ball State University with a degree in Marketing and Management. He started his career at The Kroger Company in store management where he worked for twelve years in various stores in Northern Indiana.

Following a passion for healthcare sales, he made a career change and accepted a Leasing Director position in an assisted living community in Fort Wayne, where he was quickly promoted to Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for the following eight years. Mr. Hamman was later recruited to work for Traditions Management to pre-sell and market a new assisted and independent living community in Fort Wayne. He was given the opportunity to open and manage the community for two years. 

He is married to his wife Lori, a retired RN, and together they have three wonderful children along with a Golden Retriever, Sadie. He resides in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
